Talented Family Members Play Strings

by on Jan.16, 2012

Listen to them smoke those strings. No one coaxed nor harangued them to play. They happily volunteered.

I can only imagine what they’ll do once they have become well seasoned with experience and knowledge. They’re a delightful bunch of kids who enjoy being in the lime light. There’s nothing wrong with that, is there?

marypatgleason In the current golden age of tabloid confession, you can talk about your sex life, drug problems, even money woes — but mention that you might have gone a little crazy and people shrink away, even in a world as off-kilter as show business.
So let’s cheer on Mary Pat Gleason, whose affecting and entertaining one-woman show, “Stopping Traffic,” had its world premiere Wednesday at off-Broadway’s Vineyard Theatre. Gleason has what one of her parade of doctors diagnosed as bipolar disorder, “a chemical imbalance which causes people to experience extreme highs on the one pole, and depression on the other.”

The performer is frank and funny in her descriptions of several unnerving episodes that form the heart of her engaging 85-minute talk fest, directed with a sure, steady sense of theatricality by Lonny Price.
Gleason, a bold, brash woman with an intuitive comedic flair, is a sturdy Minnesota gal, Irish-Catholic, whose family was always telling her to shut-up. Fortunately, she never did.
She traveled to New York at 27 to become an actress. A few bit parts on soaps led to a stint as script editor on “Guiding Light” and her first severe bout of depression after realizing the love of her life was in love with her boss.
That meltdown included frantic periods of hyperactivity and hallucinations, particularly one of a man curled up on the outside ledge of an apartment window. Lithium and visits to a relaxation therapist brought things under control.

Still an INTP after all these years

by on Jan.16, 2012

INTP – The Thinkers

The logical and analytical type. They are especially attuned to difficult creative and intellectual challenges and always look for something more complex to dig into. They are great at finding subtle connections between things and imagine far-reaching implications.

They enjoy working with complex things using a lot of concepts and imaginative models of reality. Since they are not very good at seeing and understanding the needs of other people, they might come across as arrogant, impatient and insensitive to people that need some time to understand what they are talking about.

Damn me. Occasionally, I even demonstrate my personal growth and get out of myself long enough to be social as an ENTP. It’s a learned thing and a mile marker for personal growth.

Try it for yourself!

He’s here! He’s finally here!

by on Jan.16, 2012

Paul-Jules’ little personality is going to be every bit like a lightning fast and hard to catch fella throughout his life just like greased pig, it seems. I’m reading into that as such because he wasn’t supposed to be born until October 30th. Instead, he decided that he would make his debut earlier than planned, almost a full month ahead, too. His birth date ended up being September 22nd. They don’t have his birth weight or the other stats just yet but I’m sure we’ll have something on him sometime soon. I’m really excited! I managed to sneak a shot of Mom when she held him up for me to see. I just hope she doesn’t skin me alive for posting the photo without her knowledge or permission!

PeanutandMom Hes here! Hes finally here!

Paul-Jules had been chowing down his supper when we interrupted his meal during an unplanned IM. Mom wanted to show him to me and saw that I was online. They live in Germany and timewise, Germany is 9 hours ahead of PDST. We don’t get to connect like this very often so indeed, doing so was a real treat for me. I’m still wearing a huge smile on my face! Moreover, I can’t think of a better way to start a brand new day!

Congratulations, Mom and Dad and, welcome to the world, Peanut! We’ve been anxiously waiting for you!

Jazz Awards names Rollins Musician of the Year

by on Jan.16, 2012

AP NEW YORK – Saxophone colossus Sonny Rollins took the top honors at the 10th annual Jazz Awards, notching a double victory as musician and tenor saxophonist of the year. The 75-year-old Rollins re-established himself at the top of the jazz scene during the past year with his Grammy-winning CD Without a Song: The 9/11 Concert, his first live recording in nearly 20 years.

Yhe album of the year award at Monday’s ceremony at B.B. King’s Blues Club and Grill went to two departed jazz legends. Thelonious Monk Quartet With John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall (Blue Note), released after tapes of a 1957 concert by the short-lived but historically significant group were discovered in the Library of Congress vaults, was chosen the year’s top album.

Several generations of drummers figured prominently at this year’s awards, which were based on votes cast by more than 400 members of the Jazz Journalists Association worldwide. The 81-year-old Roy Haynes received the award for lifetime achievement in jazz, while Cuban drummer Dafnis Prieto was named up-and-coming musician of the year. Paul Motian was chosen the year’s top drummer.
Conga player Ray Barretto, who died in February at age 76, was chosen percussionist of the year. Barretto’s last album, Standards Rican-ditioned, also the final recording by pianist Hilton Ruiz who died earlier this month after leaving a New Orleans club, is due out in August featuring an all-Puerto Rican lineup of musicians playing straight-ahead jazz standards.
Cuban pianist Bebo Valdes, now based in Sweden after serving as musical director of Havana’s pre-Castro Tropicana nightclub, garnered the award for Latin jazz album of the year for Bebo de Cuba (Calle 54). Gerald Wilson, also 87, received the award for top large ensemble.

Listen to Excerpts from Sonny’s latest CD: Without A Song – The 9/11 Concert.

Fall of the Golden Empire

The Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) finance office is under investigation for inefficiency and ineffective leadership. A bureaucratic shuffle within the CDC has prompted a political firestorm among experts in worker health and safety and has reignited questions about the Bush administration’s commitment to sound science.

Dec 1 is World AIDS day.

by on Jan.16, 2012

The HIV virus is the cause of AIDS, right? AZT is a cure for AIDS, right? Drug companies, professional fundraisers and the government officials always tell the truth, right?

Press conferences, drug company media campaigns, and government declarations are the source of most people’s knowledge about the disease called AIDS.

Before you form an opinion about this emotionally charged issue, watch this film.

You may never be tested positive for HIV, but some day you may be told you or a loved one must take a medicine that’s far, far worse than the disease.

Your health is far too important to leave up to the “science” delivered by propaganda campaigns.

Medical Marijuana: CA appeals court upholds state law

by on Jan.16, 2012

In a July 31 ruling, California’s 4th District Court of Appeals upheld the state’s voter-approved medical marijuana law against a challenge from conservative county supervisors in San Diego and San Bernadino counties. Federal drug laws do not preempt California’s medical marijuana law, the appeals court held in a unanimous decision.

The purpose of the federal law “is to combat recreational drug use, not to regulate a state’s medical practices,” wrote the 4th District Court of Appeals Associate Justice Alex McDonald.

San Diego county had filed a lawsuit against the state in 2006 challenging the validity of the state’s ID card program, but also aiming to undermine the state’s medical marijuana law overall. San Bernadino and Merced counties later joined the lawsuit. The recalcitrant counties lost in Superior Court that same year, and now they have lost again on appeal. (Merced County dropped out after the superior court ruling, opting instead to obey state law and implement an ID card program.)

But San Diego County supervisors are not yet prepared to heed the will of the voters. They announced on Tuesday that they would appeal the decision to the state Supreme Court.

Still, medical marijuana advocates celebrated the decision in County of San Diego v. San Diego NORML et al. as a victory for medical marijuana patients and states’ rights.

“This is a huge win for medical marijuana patients, not only in California, but across the country,” said Joe Elford, chief counsel for Americans for Safe Access, who argued before the appellate court on behalf of patients. “This ruling makes clear the ability of states to pass medical marijuana laws with an expectation that those laws will be upheld by local and state, if not federal, officials.”

Pets and their safety during disasters

by on Jan.16, 2012

No pet should be left behind in a disaster. They have been conditioned to depend on us for their health, safety, and welfare just like our children have been conditioned. They are not able to fend for themselves. Additionally, save thousands from a horrible fate and spare evacuees from being forced to make a heart breaking choice. Urge them to pass the PETS Act.

Let’s talk finances

by on Jan.16, 2012

The following YouTube video is a good British explanation of the world current financial mess. TV seems to make it easier to understand when talking about a complex issue, yet, that is only because they have to break it down into short clips.

Plus that is only true if the media is speaking the truth instead of its usual role which is to lie, confuse, and blame the wrong source of the problem at hand. This is so because either the owners of the stations want to be the first to get the public’s attention or the agency itself has a direct stake in the economic outcome.

Why else would General Electric a major defense contractor, financial source, and foreign employer own both NBC, a major network, and CNBC, the most important financial network? Both of these, if they are not outright for some sort of gain then they are intentionally the losers because the stakes versus the benefit are minor when compared to the total size to General Electric’s many businesses.

GE needs these to tell the necessary lies in order to protect its total business. And, this is why GE owns these particular TV networks.

Also, please meet Jim Forex of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Jim’s a great fella to get to know when it comes to discussing financial investments, stocks and trades.

Reports of home computer wiretapping surface in tempestuous New Jersey divorce case.

by on Jan.16, 2012

“Police blotter” is a weekly CNET News.com report on the intersection of technology and the law.

What: Reports of home computer wiretapping surface in tempestuous New Jersey divorce case.
When: Superior Court of New Jersey ruled June 8.
Outcome: Wife succeeds in raising her share of the settlement in a divorce case.
What happened: According to court documents

Peter Garfinkel, 41, asked for a divorce from his wife of six years, Lori Garfinkel, 38, in March 2001. They had separated earlier that month, and Lori remained in the marital home with three children under 3 years old.

After her husband started court proceedings for a divorce, Lori Garfinkel filed a counterclaim alleging the following: transmission of sexual disease, negligent infliction of emotional distress, intentional infliction of emotional distress and wiretapping.

The wiretapping charges are what make this unfortunate case relevant to Police Blotter. During the trial in state court, the judge dismissed Lori’s claims related to sexual disease and emotional distress. But Peter admitted to “wiretapping” Lori’s computer.

The description is general: Peter used an unspecified monitoring device to track his wife’s computer transactions and record her e-mails. Lori was granted $7,500 on the wiretapping claim. Overall, though, the trial judge did not find her credible and ruled that she misrepresented her income, assets and expenses. Lori appealed.

A three-judge panel of the Superior Court of New Jersey appeared to side with her. The judges reduced the amount granted to Peter and handed the case back to the trial court for additional proceedings.

This is hardly the first time computer monitoring claims have surfaced in marital spats. As previously reported by CNET News.com, a Florida court ruled last year that a wife who installed spyware on her husband’s computer to secretly record evidence of an extramarital affair violated state law.

In addition, makers of key loggers (hardware or software methods of recording keystrokes) are actively marketing their products as ways to expose spousal wrongdoing. KeyGhost’s Web site mentions “multimillion-dollar divorce settlements,” and the description of BlazingTools Software’s Perfect Keylogger includes this line: “Are you wondering if your mate is planning a divorce?”
