Cantalope Island with Herbie Hancock-Jazz Fusion

by on Dec.30, 2011

As we start out the last full week of the year 2009, let’s move into 2010 right with a bit of Herbie Hancock for our Music Monday celebration. If I don’t see or speak with you before the New Year, know that I love yas and will see you sometime soon. And don’t forget to take a good look at the Blue Moon this New Year’s Eve. We won’t see another Blue Moon until August 2nd 2012 so don’t forget to howl and blow out the funk. If you’re out and about, do it right and have a designated driver if you’ll be under the influence. I’d like to see you around somewhere, sometime.

Not too bad for just a privileged white boy

by on Dec.02, 2011

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) has apologized for not including any mention of slavery in his proclamation declaring April “Confederate History Month” and added an extra clause to the proclamation.

“The failure to include any reference to slavery was a mistake, and for that I apologize to any fellow Virginian who has been offended or disappointed,” McDonnell wrote in a statement. “The abomination of slavery divided our nation, deprived people of their God-given inalienable rights, and led to the Civil War. Slavery was an evil, vicious and inhumane practice which degraded human beings to property, and it has left a stain on the soul of this state and nation.”

He also added a clause to the proclamation that declares slavery “led to this war.”

This year’s new Teabonics must have had him sidetracked an all. We know how that goes, don’t we?

The Future with Leonard Cohen

by on Jan.25, 2011

“But cheerfulness kept breaking through,” he said with a mischieviously delicious smirk on his face.

Yet another notable Leonard Cohen quote: ‘You’ll never untangle the circumstances that brought you to this moment.”

Chew on that one awhile and see how it tastes.

R.I.P Mitch Mitchell

by on Dec.31, 2010

Mitch Mitchell, drummer for the legendary Jimi Hendrix Experience of the 1960s and the group’s last surviving member, was found dead in his hotel room early Wednesday. He was 61.

I never made it to Woodstock but I met Mitch during a weekend long outdoor Palm Springs music festival in 1967. The event was one huge psychedelic audio and visual experience to remember. Just off of Interstate 10 just West of Palm Springs high in the San Jacinto Mt. foothills, Taquitz Canyon was the era’s happenin’ place to be.

Ngiculela – Es Una Historia – I am Singing

by on Dec.06, 2010

Stevie Wonder’s 1976 album, “Songs in the Key of Life,” was the last of five consecutive albums widely hailed as his classic period. Songs in the Key of Life became among the best-selling and most critically acclaimed album of his career. Stevie has enriched the music world  since the 70s. Where he lacks in sight, his visions come from within his heart felt love songs in every sense of the word’s meanings and understandings.

Happy 90th Birthday, Dave Brubeck!

by on Dec.06, 2010

Dave Brubeck and son Chris discuss “Ansel Adams: America”, a symphonic composition they co-wrote in a tribute to the life and art of Ansel Adams. 101 photographs out of Ansel Adams collection are projected above the orchestra pit. Furthermore, don’t miss the December 6, 2009 Kennedy Center Awards in honor of Dave Brubeck in which his sons’ jazz quartet performed for the occasion.

David Warren “Dave” Brubeck (born December 6, 1920) is an American jazz pianist. He has written a number of jazz standards, including “In Your Own Sweet Way” and “The Duke”. Brubeck’s style ranges from refined to bombastic, reflecting his mother’s attempts at classical training and his improvisational skills. His music is known for employing unusual time signatures, and superimposing contrasting rhythms, meters, and tonalities.
His long-time musical partner, alto saxophonist Paul Desmond, wrote the Dave Brubeck Quartet’s best remembered piece, “Take Five”,which is in 5/4 time and has endured as a jazz classic. Brubeck experimented with time signatures throughout his career, recording “Pick Up Sticks” in 6/4, “Unsquare Dance” in 7/4, and “Blue Rondo à la Turk” in 9/8. He is also a respected composer of orchestral and sacred music, and wrote soundtracks for television such as Mr. Broadway and the animated miniseries,  This Is America, Charlie Brown.
