To our Aussie Mates, Happy Australia Day!

by on Jan.25, 2012

AustraliaDay To our Aussie Mates, Happy Australia Day!

A large party of Taliban soldiers are moving down a road when they hear a voice call from behind a sand-dune. “One  Australian soldier is better than ten Taliban.”

The Taliban commander quickly sends 10 of his best soldiers over the dune whereupon a gun-battle breaks out and continues for a few minutes, then silence.

The same voice then calls out: “One Australian is better than a hundred Taliban soldiers.”

Furious, the Taliban Commander sends his next best 100 troops over the dune And instantly a huge gunfight commences. After 10 minutes of battle, again silence.

The Aussie voice called out, “One Australian is better than one thousand Taliban”.

The enraged Taliban Commander musters a thousand fighters and sends them over the dune.Cannon, rocket and machine gun fire rings out as a huge battle is fought. Then silence.

Finally, one wounded Taliban fighter crawls back over the sand-dune and, with his dying words, tells his commander,

“Don’t send any more men, its a trap. There’s two of them over there!”

Tired of High Paid Teachers?

by on Jan.16, 2012

Are you sick of high paid teachers?

Teachers’ hefty salaries are driving up taxes, and they only work 9 or 10 months a year! It’s time we put things in perspective and pay them for what they do – baby sit!

We can get that for less than minimum wage. That’s right. Let’s give them $3.00 an hour and only the hours they worked; not any of that silly planning time, or any time they spend before or after school.

That would be $19.50 a day (7:45to 3:00 PM with 45 min. off for lunch and plan — that equals 6 1/2 hours). Each parent should pay $19.50 a day for these teachers to baby-sit their children.

Now how many do they teach in day…maybe 30? So that’s $19.50 x 30 = $585.00 a day. However, remember they only work 180 days a year!!! I am not going to pay them for any vacations.
LET’S SEE…. That’s $585 X 180= $105,300 per year. (Hold on! My calculator needs new batteries).

What about those special education teachers and the ones with Master’s degrees? Well, we could pay them minimum wage ($7.75), and just to be fair, round it off to $8.00 an hour. That would be $8 X 6 1/2 hours X 30 children X 180 days = $280,800 per year.

Wait a minute — there’s something wrong here!

There sure is! The average teacher’s salary (nation wide) is $50,000. $50,000/180 days = $277.77/per day/30 students=$9.25/6.5 hours = $1.42 per hour per student –a very inexpensive baby-sitter and they even EDUCATE your kids!)

WHAT A DEAL….

I really, really wish this was original material, but it isn’t. It was submitted to me by a fellow teacher, Gary Croft who is far from overpaid. Gary is one of those rare teachers who left a great paying industry job and opted to teach because he loves kids and he loves teaching.

This sure does put things into perspective, doesn’t it?

SNL: If Al Gore Were President

by on Jan.16, 2012

Saturday Night Live,” opened its show tonight with Al Gore addressing the nation as if he was the President of the United States. Gore was focused and quite funny in this entertaining spoof of the current administration and their long range of failures. He also struck back at the media (update: when they claimed he said he invented the ‘internets’) by saying that he invented an “Anti-Hurricane and Tornado Machine.”

Fight Truth Decay SNL: If Al Gore Were PresidentVideo -WMP Video -QT
He touched on immigration, oil, the Middle East, judges and a host of other topics that have divided our country since Bush took office. I did enjoy GWB leading the charge to clean up Baseball’s steroid problem: “But I have faith in baseball commissioner George W. Bush when he says, “We will find the steroid users if we have to tap every phone in America!”

Speak No Evil.

by on Jan.16, 2012

Why gossip is bad for your soul.
By Lori Palatnik with Bob Burg

A nineteenth-century folktale tells about a man who went about town slandering the town’s wise man. One day, he went to the wise man’s home and asked for forgiveness. The wise man, realizing that this man had not internalized the gravity of his transgressions, told him that he would forgive him on one condition: that he go home, take a feather pillow from his house, cut it up, and scatter the feathers to the wind. After he had done so, he should then return to the wise man’s house.

Though puzzled by this strange request, the man was happy to be let off with so easy a penance. He quickly cut up the pillow, scattered the feathers, and returned to the house. “Am I now forgiven?” he asked.

“Just one more thing,” the wise man said. “Go now and gather up all the feathers.”

“But that’s impossible. The wind has already scattered them.”

“Precisely,” he answered. “And though you may truly wish to correct the evil you have done, it is as impossible to repair the damage done by your words as it is to recover the feathers. Your words are out there in the marketplace, spreading hate, even as we speak.”

How interesting it is that we, as human beings, so quick to believe the bad that others say about someone, so accepting of the “news” contained in print and television tabloids, and so ready to assume the worst regarding another’s actions, actually allow ourselves to believe that the evil we spread about someone won’t really matter. Incredible that we can’t seem to immediately and resolutely accept the fact that the gossip we speak can–and often does–significant damage to that person.

Bob’s friend, Paul Myers, says, “Gossip is like a fired bullet. Once you hear the sound, you can’t take it back.” That is what the man in the above story found out in a very disappointing, shameful moment of self-discovery. And it isn’t just what we say about someone to others, but what we say to that person directly as well. We’ve all been told that “Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never harm me.” We also know that is totally untrue. While a body will typically recover from a physical injury, the harm caused by direct insults can sometimes last a lifetime, and tear the self-esteem right out of a person.

On the other hand, kind, encouraging words can build a person’s self-esteem, help him or her to grow and give them the impetus they need to do great, significant things with their lives. The choice regarding how we speak about or to someone is ours. It’s called “free will.”

The files wgavn.exe and dcpromo.log are really the Cuebot-K worm, also known as W32/Cuebot-K, Backdoor.Win32.IRCBot., and Win32/IRCBot.OO. January 18th: National Blackout Day of Protest Against SOPA

by on Jan.16, 2012

Reddit is committed to black out its site on January 18 for 12 hours in protest of the US government’s pursuit of the SOPA act. We will also honor that, and will be blacked out as much as possible.

The freedom, innovation, and economic opportunity that the Internet enables is in jeopardy. Congress is considering legislation that will dramatically change your Internet experience and put an end to reddit and many other sites you use everyday. Internet experts, organizations, companies, entrepreneurs, legal experts, journalists, and individuals have repeatedly expressed how dangerous this bill is. If we do nothing, Congress will likely pass the Protect IP Act (in the Senate) or the Stop Online Piracy Act (in the House), and then the President will probably sign it into law. There are powerful forces trying to censor the Internet, and a few months ago many people thought this legislation would surely pass. However, there’s a new hope that we can defeat this dangerous legislation.

PROTECT IP / SOPA Breaks The Internet from Fight for the Future on Vimeo.

There is an incredible amount of activism organized by Redditors at /r/sopa and across the Reddit community at large. Everyone has made a differenceand as we near the next stage, we have decided to join Reddit and the others on January 18th from 8am–8pm EST (1300–0100 UTC).

Thank you for your faithfulcommitment to an oppressive-free internet.

Telemarketing fraud claimed to help handicapped halted

by on Jan.03, 2012

FTC Scams 150x150 Telemarketing fraud claimed to help handicapped halted

An Arizona-based telemarketing operation that called itself  “Helping Hands of Hope”  has settled FTC charges that it conned consumers into buying household items such as light bulbs and trash bags that were priced substantially higher than at retail, by falsely promising the proceeds would benefit charities or the disabled. A court order settles the FTC’s charges against Helping Hands of Hope, Inc.; U.S. Blind Services, Inc.; Employment Opportunities of America, Inc.; Third Strike Employment, Inc.; and Robyn Mayhan, president of these companies. The defendants will be permanently barred from such fraudulent conduct and from calling consumers who have asked not to be called. The consent order imposes a judgment of $26.3 million against all of the defendants. The corporate defendants will turn over assets worth more than $60,000 in partial satisfaction of the judgment. The judgment against Mayhan has been suspended, based on her inability to pay, but she will be responsible for the full amount if she is later found to have misrepresented her financial condition. Calif. High Court: No Mystery to Employee’s ‘At Will’ Contract

by on Jan.03, 2012

employment lg 150x150 Calif. High Court: No Mystery to Employees At Will Contract

California workers were put on alert by the state Supreme Court on Thursday that at-will jobs are just that: Employers don’t need a reason to fire you. The unanimous ruling is a boon for the business community and clarifies an area of the law that had gotten increasingly murky because of conflicting appellate court opinions in recent years. “As long as you use the phrase ‘at will,’ it means at will,” overjoyed defense lawyer Robert Mason III said Thursday.
