Accountability and Responsibility are finally here!
A blogger has been fined 1.8 million dollars for defamation. It’s about time, too. You can read about it in this article.
“The head of a local advertising agency has won $1.8 million in damages after suing an author of a blog – known for its harsh and sometimes crass criticism of elected officials, business leaders and local media – for defamation.”
Bloggers are publishers and a publisher is responsible for what gets published. It doesn’t matter whether he or she actually wrote it. A blog owner is now wholly responsible for what information or disinformation ends up on the net.

This is an important story! Bloggers should be mindful of the law. Whilst we might enjoy the recent phenonmenon of computer mediated communciation, and some of its anonymity it doesn’t mean we are free from long standing social courtesies and the legal prohibitions.

Agreed that we cannot be above the law when it comes to blogging but hopefully this will not lead to a speight of cases that are less justified.
