A mystery behind Moeraki boulders

by on Sep.28, 2010

If you ever get to travel to Koekohe beach in New Zealand you can expect to see a huge surprise. Scattered like enormous marbles from some long abandoned game between giants, you’ll find hundreds of giant spherical rocks; or are they the egg shells of sea-born dragons? Visually, they present a story of  mystery and are impressive. Which force of nature shaped them, where did they come from and how did they manage to set up camp there?

Welcome to Music Monday

by on Sep.18, 2010

It’s been ages since Maryannaville has formally joined a group of wonderful bloggers who share the same interests, therefore, welcome Music Monday to our list of scheduled posts. Music Monday will be posted every Monday. It feels great to be actively involved with a healthy group of bloggers once again.

This past Saturday, I had the opportunity to call a professor I had during the 80s. He was not only loved by many for his wealth of knowledge, he was also a good friend to many and generously extended his hand in friendship to many. He was indeed a very good friend. My regret is that I had misplaced his phone number and took too long to call. If I had known, I would have joined his wife Jan, his family, and the many students he had throughout the years who were with him the day he passed. I’m sorry for that.

Del Barnett, this song is in honor of your life. It’s called, Come back when you can, by Barcelona.

Bail-out 2008: We didn’t even get a kiss

by on Sep.18, 2010

I read this story yesterday. Banks are getting the $250,000,000,000.00 Treasury. Secretary Treasury Paulson has instructed them buy out other banks. Plus that, there is twice as much yet to be distributed.

Financial goal: Purchase K-Y® stock in his and hers.

Yes we can, Mr. Obama! Impeach them both.

by on Sep.18, 2010

The National Campaign for Nonviolent Resistance appeals first to Michael Mukasey and then to Barack Obama to indict Bush and Cheney. Moreover, dozens of protesters have gathered outside the Department of Justice to urge indictment and trial of the US President and Vice President. See the report plus the video located at PressTV.

Obama: Beware the Lessons of ’93

“Barack Obama seeks a new era of bipartisanship, but he should take heed of what happened to the last Democrat in the White House – Bill Clinton – in 1993 when he sought to appease Republicans by shelving pending investigations into Reagan-Bush-I-era wrongdoing and hoped for some reciprocity.”

Thanksgiving Comes Early for Some New Orleans Defendants

by on Sep.18, 2010

Five hundred criminal defendants in New Orleans will have something to be thankful for this Thanksgiving: the dismissal of their respective cases. As New York Times reporter Luanne White reports in this article, In New Orleans, Rust in the Wheels of Justice (11/21/06), in the aftermath of Katrina, “as many as 500 defendants, mostly in drug, theft and assault cases, have been freed because of problems with evidence, including difficulty in finding the witnesses who have moved away.”

In many cases, evidence has been lost or contaminated through water damage or mold. DNA samples were held without refrigeration for several months, which may ruin their usefulness. One Tulane law professor, Pamela Metzger has urged public defense lawyers to challenge the condition of the evidence in their cases.

But the loss of evidence can cut both ways. As the article notes:
Katherine Mattes, another Tulane law professor, said the lost or damaged evidence could also make it harder for innocent people to shake off charges filed against them. She said, for instance, that a rusted gun might no longer fire, making it impossible to conduct new ballistic tests that might show it could not have been used in a murder. “What people say when you describe all the evidence problems is how terrible it will be if we have people who committed crimes and can’t be prosecuted,” she said. “But it also can work the other way.”
