Arizona Sheriff Joe’s head: Mexican drug cartel offers $1M bounty for Arpaio

by on Jul.31, 2010

Everything has its price although this may very well be an Arizonian political ploy. After all, why now?

“A chilling audio tape with text, circulating by e-mail, has been reported that puts a million dollar price on conservative hero, Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s head. Is it a coincidence that this was reported on the same day that Arizona’s immigration law, SB 1070, became effective?

Though the SB 1070 law that has gone into effect is a gutted version of the real bill, yesterday was also the day that Governor Brewer filed an expedited appeal, vowing to fight all the way to the Supreme Court if necessary. Yesterday was also the day that busloads of imported protesters from California chained themselves outside Sheriff Arpaio’s jail.”

by on Jul.27, 2010

“Yahoo China pasted a ‘most wanted’ poster across its homepage today in aid of the police’s witch-hunt for 24 Tibetans accused of taking part in the recent riots. MSN China made the same move, although it didn’t go as far as publishing the list on its homepage.”

Lightning lights up the night sky

by on Jul.24, 2010

A thunderstorm passed through Roswell, New Mexico on July 14, 2010. Summer months are a guarantee to refresh the hot and arid southwest afternoon rains with thunder claps alongside outstanding lightening bolts. Each morning’s triple digit temperatures are soothed with rain freshened  air by early evening. Residual evening temps are  in the area of  mid to low 80s alongside light evening breezes.

On a lighter note

by on Jul.13, 2010

A new supermarket near my place just recently opened so I decided to check it out. It has an automatic water mister to keep produce fresh. And, just before it went on, I heard the sound of thunder and enjoyed the smell of fresh rain.

When I approached the milk case, I heard cows mooing, and smell the scent of fresh hay.

When I got to the egg case, I heard hens cluck and cackle, and the air became filled with the pleasing aroma of bacon and eggs frying.

The veggie department featured the sound of a gentle breeze and the smell of fresh buttered corn.

In all of today’s interesting and experiences at the newest grocery store in town, I decided to not purchase toilet paper there again.

Save Sakineh

by on Jul.09, 2010

Yesterday, Iranian woman prisoner, Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, was saved by global protests from being stoned to death. However, she may still be hanged. In the meantime, execution by stoning in Iran continues. Presently there are fifteen more people on death row. They await the cruel sentence of being stoned to death.

The partial reprieve of Sakineh, triggered by the call from her children for international pressure to save her life, has shown that if enough of us come together and collectively voice our horror, we may be able to save her life, and stop stoning once and for all. Sign the urgent petition now. Copy and paste this post and send it onto everyone you know. Let’s end this cruel slaughter!

Sakineh was convicted of adultery, as were the other 12 women and one of the men. But her children and lawyer say she is innocent and that she did not get a fair trial. Her confession was forced from her through the use of pain. She confessed once she received 99 lashes. And, speaking only Azerbaijani, she did not understand what was being asked of her in court.

Despite Iran’s signing of a UN convention that requires the death penalty only be used for the “most serious crimes” and despite the Iranian Parliament passing a law banning stoning last year, stoning for adultery continues.

Sakineh’s lawyer says the Iranian government “is afraid of Iranian public reaction and international attention” to the stoning cases. And after Turkey and Britain’s Foreign Ministers spoke out against Sakineh’s sentence, it was suspended.

Sakineh’s children have taken the initiative and are now leading the international campaign to save their mother and to stop the cruel use of stoning. Massive international condemnation now could finally stop this sickening punishment.

Please take a stand with the rest of us and sign the petition.

Death by stoning and people in glass houses

by on Jul.08, 2010

death stones Death by stoning and people in glass housesIn the news today there’s a truly horrific story about an Iranian woman who is facing death by stoning after being convicted of adultery. Amnesty International have called on the Iranian authorities to halt the imminent execution.

Mother-of-two, Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani was convicted of having an ‘illicit relationship’ with two men in May 2006 and received 99 lashes as her sentence. Yes, she has already been whipped and imprisoned.. Despite this, she has also been convicted of adultery and sentenced to death by stoning. The 43-year-old has retracted her ‘confession’ which she says was forced out of her.

With death by stoning, men are buried up to their waist and women up to their breasts before a group of around 20 men hurl stones and rocks at them until they are dead. Women are buried deeper because apparently its okay to take a jagged rock on the head but ‘immodest’ if it hits your breasts. Thoughtful. They carefully select rocks that are not too small (where death might take hours or days) or too big (death might be instant). Medium sized rocks ensure the proper amount of suffering before death.

With all of that in mind, you might like to see this petition to save her life. Its being organized by the good guys, Amnesty International. Appealing for help to the international community, her daughter, Farideh, 16, and son, Sajad, 20, said: ‘Please help end this nightmare and do not let it turn into a reality. Help us save our mother.’

As we all get rightfully indignant about this obscene throw-back to a medieval time lets not forget that only last month another obscene throw-back to a medieval time happened in America. In the gun-loving state of Utah, Ronnie Lee Gardner was judicially killed by firing squad, his heart ripped to pieces by bullets blasted from the rifles of five gunmen hidden behind a brick wall. Afterward Utah’s State attorney, Mark Shurtleff, tweeted the news that the killing had taken place.

The manner of the Iranian woman’s execution is particularly horrible but death is death. However the state kills you they take your life. It is the death penalty itself which is a vile throwback to ignorant, medieval times. It has no place whatsoever in the modern world and indeed most civilized societies have outlawed it. America stubbornly keeps dubious company with China and Iran by persisting in judicially killing its own citizens. Its a despicable and indefensible position to be in.

Of course I’m horrified by what will happen in Iran to Sakineh and I hope enough international pressure can prevent it. In criticizing its barbarity though I’m also uncomfortably aware that people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.
