Tell Your Congressman and Senators, "No More Abu Ghraibs"

by Saboma on Jan.30, 2010

Ask Congress to Fully Investigate CIA and DoD Interrogation Methods

April 28 will be the third anniversary of the disclosure of the detainee abuse that took place at Abu Ghraib after the US invasion of Iraq. Over the last three years there has been a continuous outcry against the Administration’s interrogation policies, including among the military and intelligence communities. The Department of Defense (DoD) has developed clearer guidelines prohibiting most abusive practices but it still continues to involve mental health professionals in the interrogation of detainees, making them active members of the “Behavioral Science Consultation Teams” (BSCTs). Ambiguities in the DoD guidelines and weaker standards for the CIA leave room for continued abuse and not enough accountability.

Please join PHR’s Campaign Against Torture in urging Congress to fully investigate the techniques used in CIA and Department of Defense interrogations, those who authorized them, and the involvement of health professional in these abusive practices.

Medics, physicians and psychologists played direct roles in the severe abuse of Mohammed al-Qahtani, the alleged “20th 9/11 hijacker” and others.
Government documents reveal that at Guantanamo Bay in 2002 and 2003, while under clinical supervision, monitoring and treatment, Qahtani was subjected to over 40 days of interrogation involving dogs, prolonged sleep deprivation, humiliation, forcible restraint, hypothermia and compulsory intravenous infusions. As Steven Miles, MD, recently pointed out in The American Journal of Bioethics, health professionals who treated Qahtani prolonged harsh interrogations and used their training as behavioral scientists to break him down.

The public record now shows that the abusive interrogation techniques used against Mohammad al-Qahtani and many others at multiple sites may have originated with the Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape (SERE) military training program at Fort Bragg, NC.
Evidence suggests that SERE psychologists were instrumental in creating the techniques that have been used at Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo Bay and elsewhere. In a groundbreaking article in The New Yorker, journalist Jane Mayer reports that, according to several sources with knowledge of SERE activities, “after September 11 several psychologists versed in SERE techniques began advising interrogators at Guantanamo Bay and elsewhere. Some of these psychologists essentially ‘tried to reverse-engineer’ the SERE program.”

Military psychologists who were present during abusive interrogations wrote the ethics policy that allows psychologists to continue participating in interrogations.
Growing concerns over the roles of psychologists in abusive interrogations prompted the American Psychological Association to create a blue-ribbon task force to make policy recommendations about psychologist involvement in interrogations, which were later adopted by the association’s board. The task force endorsed participation by psychologists in national security-related interrogations. Mark Benjamin has reported in Salon.com that “6 of the 10 psychologists on the task force have close ties to the military…. 4 of the psychologists who crafted the permissive policy were involved with the handling of detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, or served with the military in Afghanistan…”

In the three years since the Abu Ghraib scandal, the evidence supporting PHR’s strong advocacy for a ban on all health professional participation in interrogations has increased substantially. Yet much more needs to be known about what has happened in the past and what continues to occur.

Please join the Campaign Against Torture in calling for a full Congressional investigation into the role of SERE techniques in CIA and Department of Defense interrogations, and the involvement of psychologists and other health professionals.

Yet another noteable quote  is:

‘You’ll never untangle the circumstances that brought you to this moment.”

Chew on that one awhile and see how it tastes.

Google To Create Blog Search; Potential Removal From Main Indexing

by Saboma on Jan.25, 2010

news Google To Create Blog Search; Potential Removal From Main IndexingGoogle, search engine of choice for pretty much everyone, has announced that it will begin a separate index for blogs and remove them from the normal index, handling them instead in much the same way as their usenet archives. This will hopefully put an end to the recent difficulties locating primary source material among the mountains of blogs which are clogging the ratings system.”

Flu shot blues

by Saboma on Jan.25, 2010

I received this year’s flu shot last Thursday and have been experiencing side effects from it since Saturday. The sides will be over with soon, I understand. Until that time arrives, just color me as being out of commission. I just hope that I don’t smell as raunchy as I feel.

Thank goodness this is only a small taste of the flu. I sure wouldn’t want to tango with a full dose of it. While I’m recovering, for those of you who are still self-medicating, ponder this:

S.J. County to require builders to match farmland acre for acre

by Saboma on Jan.25, 2010

Forever is a long time.
It’s a statement that comes up often when farmers, landowners and politicians get to talking about farm easements, where the future development rights to a property are sold to preserve it as agricultural space. Most easements are expected to last “in perpetuity,” meaning once those rights are sold, the property is expected to remain a farm for centuries, if not longer.

Out of Solitude

by Saboma on Jan.25, 2010

DragonFly2 Out of Solitude
“When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives means the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving much advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a gentle and tender hand.

The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares,” wrote Henri Nouwen in, *Out of Solitude.*

Joost Invitations Are Now Gone – Thanks!

by Saboma on Jan.25, 2010

A few weeks ago, Maryannaville became a beta tester for “The Venice Project ” That name was changed to “Joost” back in January. I have been given three invitations to give away to other’s who might wish to be a part of this project.

In case you don’t have a clue what Joost is about, it is a streaming online TV project created by Skype’s founder and co-founder. Joost’s V.P. David Clark explains more about it in this YouTube video speaking about Joost and how it operates. Please watch the YouTube video first and if ya want it, I’ll need you to send me your email address. Please do that separately and away from this blog. I’ll will send you an invitation via Joost. Send your emails to: maryannaville [at] gmail [dot] com.

I have to admit that so far, Joost is pretty neat.

Update: Two invitations were requested and sent.
There is only one invitation remaining at 17:17 hrs PDST.
Just like the title to this post says, “Joost invitations are now gone.”
That means that they have been distributed and three new Joost members are happy Joost campers.

What Joost invitations that I have will be given out to our readers – not to those who are merely looking for a Joost invitation, and I can tell which ones are readers and who is simply looking for an invitation but good luck in your quest at being invited to Joost anyway.

"Like gas, this too shall pass"

by Saboma on Jan.25, 2010

regret 1 "Like gas, this too shall pass"

Regret is something everyone has yet regret is nothing anyone can afford to keep. While being remorseful is commendable when there is a genuine need to be sorry for wrong or ill behavior, living with regret is to add to it. There will always be those who are unable to admit they have been wrong or that they exercised ill behavior. And, there will always be those who carry it with them insomuch that they become bowed in body and in spirit.

Thomas Moore, the Irish poet, once quipped, “Remorse is beholding heaven and feeling hell,” but perhaps just knowing heaven can exist makes regret more hellish. Often it will render the remorsefully disempowered to lift themselves out of the predicament. Then again, there is the power of forgiveness. A daily vow or affirmation can motivate one to take a step further toward rising above the things that have caused regret. If unhappiness has become one’s lot in life remember that, like gas, it too shall pass.
