The United States celebrates Constitution Day on the 17th of September. On that day in 1787, thirty-nine delegates to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia signed the Constitution of the United States. Among the important consequences of that action was the creation of the United States Senate. This would not have been possible without the Great Compromise reached one month earlier, which established the basis of representation in the Senate and House of Representatives, ending a dispute between the large and small states. New Hampshire adopted the Constitution on June 21, 1788, becoming the necessary ninth state to ensure the document’s ratification. The following September, the Pennsylvania legislature elected William Maclay and Robert Morris, the first United States senators chosen under the new Constitution. In 2004, Senator Robert C. Byrd introduced and the Senate passed legislation to establish a yearly celebration of “Constitution Day.”
It was once proudly claimed that the U.S. Constitution is the world’s oldest working Constitution. Yet, when the Bush Doctrine was enacted, not much of the above mentioned means much of anything anymore.

Frank Zappa, et. al., sings about the “Big Lies” in 1988 – Barcelona, Spain.
They got lies so big
They don’t make a noise
They tell ‘em so well
Like a secret disease
That makes you go numb
With a big ol’ lie
And a flag and a pie
And a mom and a bible
Most folks are just liable
To buy any line
Any place, any time
When the lie’s so big
As in Robertson’s case,
That sinister face
(Behind all the Jesus hurrah)
Could result in the end
To a worrisome trend
In which every American
Not “born again”
Could be punished in cruel and unusual ways
By this treacherous cretin
Who tells everyone
That he’s Jesus’ best friend
When the lie’s so big
And the fog gets so thick
And the facts disappear
The Republican Trick
Can be played out again
People, please tell me when
We’ll be rid of these men?
Just who do they really
Suppose that they are?
And how did they manage to travel as far
As they seem to have come?
Were we really that dumb?
People, wake up
Figure it out
Religious fanatics
Around and about
The Court House, The State House,
The Congress, The White House
Criminal saints
With a “Heavenly Mission”
A nation enraptured
By pure superstition
When the lie’s so big
And the fog gets so thick
And the facts disappear
The Republican Trick
Can be played out again
People, please tell me when
We’ll be rid of these men!

Congressman Dennis Kucinich will present a petition to Nancy Pelosi in support of impeaching President Bush on September 10th, just three days from today. This past August, Kucinich presented a petition bearing approximately 100,000 names. This time around, he’s shooting for 1,000,000. Let’s help him achieve this task. Sign the petition: http://www.kucinich.us
What will impeachment do? What is the purpose of it since there are only a few months left in the Bush and Cheney’s autocracy? The answer is that it would set a historic and legal precedent, telling future presidents that they are not above the law and they have to stay within their Constitutional bounds. Remember that this is America and it is not okay for a president to give himself the power to arrest and detain any person he deems an “enemy combatant.” It is not okay to give no-bid contracts to your cronies. It is not okay to ignore international treaties that have been ratified as US law. It is not okay to torture. It is not okay to lie in order to send our troops into an unnecessary war. The president does not decide what is legal and what is illegal.

During the Democratic convention in Chicago, peace demonstrations backing Senator Eugene McCarthy took place for a few days in Lincoln Park. Old Democratic Party boss Mayor Richard J. Daley decided to call a curfew and called up state troopers and the National Guard to help the Chicago Police Department enforce it. The demonstrations turned into protests calumniating on the night of August 29, 1968 in front of the Hilton Hotel at Democratic Party Headquarters. Cameras were running as the world watched the police pound the crap out of white people for a change. TV screens showed the mayhem while the vote was ensuing inside causing almost as much ruckus as outside. The old Democratic Party machine with Hubert Humphrey trounced the peace candidate going on to lose the upcoming election to Richard Nixon.
